Good news to report! Class 2 win All-Ireland Gold in Galway
The first round of the Class 2 competition was once again played in Clonmel in February. We qualified for the All-Ireland Semi-Final in Galway by being runners-up to Cork in Clonmel. Now normally the All-Ireland is held in April but this year it was played on 19 March. We met an unknown Derry team and managed to beat them 5-4 and were in the final against our old rivals Cork who had beaten Meath. The final was one of those days that will stick out in my memory for sometime. We were 3-0 down after some very close encounters with all players giving it their best. At this stage, was the writing on the wall or was there better to come from this team? From 3-0 down, we raised our game and winning the next 5 matches in a row, we captured the All-Ireland title.
Thanks to all players for their help, support and advice, long may it continue. They made my job very easy when it came to rearranging and playing the games. Pride of place goes to the beautiful gift I received from the team members. It was a total surprise to me on the day. It was the icing on the cake after a fruitful outing, thank you all sincerely.
A big thanks to all Co. Board officials, Peggy, Junior and anyone else who helped out during the past season,
Yours in Badminton

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP CLASS 2 WINNING TEAM 2003
On Sunday, 16 February 2003, we played the first round of the All-Ireland qualifiers at Tralee Sports Complex. Kerry played some great badminton and qualified for the All-Ireland final by beating Cork, Tipperary and Limerick.
Personally, I was very impressed with the teams overall performance. I knew with a bit of self-belief that we had a great chance of winning the All-Ireland. Full credit must go the team themselves, because for the next 6 weeks they spent all their spare time practising and it paid handsome dividends on Saturday, 6 April 03.
It was only the week before that we were told, that it was Donegal we would be playing in the final. Having played Donegal in two previous finals and lost, I knew that on those occasions we should have won, but we were lacking self-confidence and practice. On this occasion I knew we had covered both. The rest is history.
I now quote from what Junior wrote in his absolute brilliant column on Thursday, 10 April, “MAGIC! Sheer, absolute magic! All the superlatives in the world that the mind may conjure would not do justice to a wonderful Kerry badminton team that scaled the heights to capture the county’s second ever Class 2 All-Ireland crown in sunny Galway on Saturday last. This was a breath taking performance by a team, which was ranked as complete outsiders against a Donegal side who most badminton pundits felt had only to turn up for the presentation ceremony on Saturday evening. With a host of youth internationals on their line-out, Donegal were everyone’s fancy”.
Junior, I thank you for such magical words.
What else can I say-it was a great achievement by a brilliant team that were full of kindness, understanding and were so dedicated. I was thrilled and delighted when Sheila presented me on the night of our Badminton Social with one of badmintons highest awards, a Class 2 All-Ireland medal.
And in Dromtariffe, when Tom Bourke, who was the inspirational captain, presented a beautiful Waterford Crystal to me, on behalf of the team, I was completely knocked out.
Many All-Ireland titles have been won by the Brosnan household, but pride of place now goes to those two beautiful gifts, which I received, from you. Having had many great sporting occasions in the past, winning the All-Ireland Class 2 will go down as one of the greatest moments of my life. And a very special thanks to Junior, Sheila and the Kerry team that created that moment for me.
I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Tom McElligott and his team for winning the Brewster Cup.
I’d like to congratulate Marie Maher and the Class 4 team who played so well but were unlucky in the All-Ireland Final.
My sincere thanks to Helen Twomey who organised the practice sessions.
A special word of thanks to the people who made their cars available for each tournament.
And last but not least, to the people who travelled and gave us much needed support, Thank you.
Yours in sport

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP CLASS 3 WINNING TEAM 2002
Really, they don’t come any sweeter than this!
Galway City on Saturday last saw a virtuoso Kerry performance in the All-Ireland Class 3 Badminton Championship that could have come right out of the top drawer of the Tales of the Unexpected series.
No county had previously won back-to-back Class 3 titles and the odds seemed to be stacked against the Kingdom as they sought to create another bit of Kerry badminton history. With half of last year’s squad being upgraded, the odds were completely stacked against Kerry, but, boy, did they defy the pundits and rise to the occasion!
So, straight to the semi-final against the Royal County of Meath. It was the singles ties first with Eileen O’Connor in the ladies and Billy Lacey in the men’s who were on duty for the Kingdom. Lacey had a great start in his game against Cormac Meegan. He was moving well around the court and putting his opponent under pressure. He led at 6:2; 7:4 and at 10:6 and was looking good. The Meath man, however, fought back to level at 11 each and smelt victory. As it turned out, he outgunned Lacey to take the set by 15-12. The Kerryman never really recovered and lost the second set by 15-6. Eileen O’Connor, however, levelled the match for Kerry when, showing great fitness, she won in two sets by 11-7, 11-3.
The first men’s doubles and first ladies doubles were shared. The Nelligan brothers of Castleisland, Eric and Alan, had a great three-set battle with their Royal County opponents and were somewhat unlucky to lose out in the third set by 15-11. The ladies were once again the saviours of Kerry. Helen Twomey and Eileen O’Connor really gelled together and they were convincing two-set winners by 15-7; 15-3.
The Royals, however, took over in both of the second doubles. The men’s tie saw Kerry’s Michael Crossan and Mike McCarron go down by 15-11;15-12. Kerry’s second ladies doubles pairing of Mary Falvey and Marie Maher also lost, but this was one of the games of the day and a large attendance really enjoyed it.
The first set was really neck and neck, but well-placed drop shots by the Meath pair left the Kerry girls in trouble and the Royals edged home by 15-3. The Kerry ladies really took over in the second set and lorded over the action to win by 15-5. The final set was electrifying and one that really had both sets of followers abuzz. The Kerry pair were down 9-3, but they stormed back to level at nine each. Meath again took over and went 12-9 in front, but these Kerry girls don’t give in and the sides were locked again at 13 each. Meath went to match point, 14-13, but Kerry broke serve and levelled again at 14 each to set up the tie-break for three points. This time, it was Kerry who nosed in front at 15-14, but, fair play to the Meath pair, they too were game battlers. They broke serve and clinched this thrilling game to win the set at 17-15. It was some spectacle.
These results left Kerry in serious trouble and with more than a mountain to climb. Out of a nine-game match, it was now Meath 4, Kerry 2, with the three mixed doubles ties left to play.
Manager Tom Bradley and team captain Mary Falvey rallied their troops. The experienced Helen Twomey referred to last year when Kerry, in the play-off section and in the All-Ireland final itself, both against Cork, were in the same position and went on to win all of the mixed games. “We did it before,” Mrs. Twomey exclaimed, “And we can do it again.” How right she was!
It was the Glenflesk lady herself and Billy Lacey who began this wonderful Kerry recovery by winning in two sets, 15-11, 15-7. The confidence generated by this win seemed to spread to all the other Kerry players. At first mixed, Mary Falvey and Eric Nelligan were supreme and it was they who levelled the match at four games each when winning in two sets by 15-7, 15-6.
All eyes were focused on the last game, the third mixed tie in which Marie Maher and Alan Nelligan were fighting the Kerry cause. It was the Meath pair who dictated the pattern of play in the first set and it was they who won it by 15-9. It wasn’t looking good for Kerry, but each and every point in the second set was fought for as if life itself depended on it. The younger Nelligan was majestic. He really came of age and, ably helped by Miss Maher, the Kingdom won 15-7 and were back in the match. It was Nelligan, now reigning supreme, who controlled the final set of this nine-match thriller and Kerry won it by 15-7, to qualify for another All-Ireland final.
In the other semi-final, Wexford had defeated a fancied Donegal side, so it was the Kingdom v the Slaneysiders in the final.
As in the semi-final, the singles were divided. Billy Lacey certainly could not be faulted for trying, but it was the talented Wexford man, Liam Sinnott, who came out on top in two sets, 15-8, 15-12.
The ladies singles tie saw Eileen O’Connor win the first set by 11-7, but the Wexford girl, Karen Hennessey, fought back to take the second by 11-6. The third set was a great contest which provided many wonderful long rallies and the fitness of Kerry’s O’Connor was to prove crucial. The Milltown girl covered acres of ground and returned shots that were winners all the way. She broke the Wexford girl’s heart and the third set went to O’Connor by 11-3.
Wexford again went in front by taking the second men’s doubles match, with Kerry’s Michael Crossan and Mike McCarron going down narrowly by 15-13, 15-12. Kerry’s first ladies, Helen Twomey and Eileen O’Connor, were on fire. From the word ‘go’ in their match, they were always in control and were convincing winners by 15-4, 15-4.
Wexford, however, badly wanted the title too and they went 3-2 in front when taking the second ladies match, Mary Falvey and Marie Maher losing out by 15-7; 15-13. It was the Nelligan brothers who brought Kerry back into the game – and what a first set! The sides were locked together at 7 each and at 12 each. The Kerry pair then led at 13-12, but the Wexford boys never gave in and it went to the tie-break when the sides were level again at 14 each. Those vital points went to Kerry, winning at 17-14. The brothers were now clicking together and went 9-4 in front, point number nine being a fantastic drop shot by Alan Nelligan from the base of the court. The Kerry boys went to 12-7 and another great net shot put the Kerry pair at 13-7. Wexford, however, regained serve, and they staged a comeback, winning three points in a row. Kerry then took the initiative and went to 14-10 match point and a hard-fought victory was secured at 15-10 to level the match at 3 games each.
It was again down to the mixed doubles games and all three were on at the same time in adjoining courts. Again, it was Kerry who dictated the mixed ties with all three ladies being masterful around the net.
It was Helen Twomey and Billy Lacey who first brought Kerry a step closer to All-Ireland glory. They won a tight first set at 15-12 and were always in control of the second. Despite the final scoreline, this was a wonderful exhibition of badminton. Kerry went to match point at 14-5, but how elusive that vital point proved to be. Eight times the Kerry pair received serve, but the Wexford pair never yielded. Some of the rallies were absolutely superb. One in particular saw the shuttle crossing the net no less than 47 times. The large attendance certainly showed their appreciation with prolonged applause. The Wexford pair narrowed the gap to 14-7 and Kerry hearts were beating overtime. Victory, however, was clinched after another long rally, with the Wexford man putting the shuttle beyond the base line. It was now Kerry 4, Wexford 3.
The third mixed tie saw Marie Maher and Alan Nelligan win their first set by 15-10, but the second set saw them with a fight on their hands. In the meantime, Mary Falvey and Eric Nelligan had a fight on their hands too. The first set saw them lead at 5-0, but Wexford levelled at 5 each. Again, Kerry led at 7-5 and at 8-6, but the Slaneyside pair came back to tie at 8 each. From there on, however, it was all Kerry, with Nelligan using his height and great power to telling effect. The spirited Mary Falvey controlled the net play and it was Kerry’s set by 15-8. The second set saw Kerry go to 2-0, but again Wexford came back to two each. A wonderful back-hand drop shot by Nelligan put the Kingdom in front by 3-2 and from there on it was “Thy Kingdom Come.” The Kerry pair were on fire and they raced away to a 10:2 and 12:3 lead. Three points to go for All-Ireland glory!
All Kerry eyes were focused on the Kerry gladiators and they did not disappoint. Wexford did slightly narrow the gap, but it was Kerry win at 15-6 and Class 3 All-Ireland title No. 4 for Kerry, the other titles being won in 1980, 1985 and 2001.
The third mixed tie did not finish as the title was secured – and how the many supporters mobbed the Kerry players!
For one man in particular this was a very special and proud moment, namely team manager Tom Bradley. The Currow man, who is a level 2 badminton coach, has been a wonderful servant to Kerry badminton. For ten years he has been a team manager at one level or another. When asked to do a job, Tom has never shirked responsibility. He has been manager of teams that have contested many All-Ireland semi-finals and finals over those years, but Saturday last was his first taste of All-Ireland glory and how his charges showed their appreciation to him. No better man!
The All-Ireland Cup was presented to team captain, Mary Falvey, by the President of the Badminton Union of Ireland, Mr David Galloway. Mrs. Falvey was also a member of the 1985 winning team. Both Eileen O’Connor and Helen Twomey had a 100 percent record in the four games they each played.
The winning Kerry Class 3 side were:

BREWSTER CUP WINNING TEAM 2003
On the way to a Munster Branch meeting with Junior Griffin and Sheila Hannon, the problem of finding a replacement manager for the Brewster Cup came up. By the time the return journey was over I had been persuaded to take on the job of caretaker manager. With less than 2 weeks to go a panel of players was assembled, and preparations made. There was no time to organise squad sessions, which at times can be more trouble than they are worth, and the key I think is that if players are playing regularly and enter in every competition open to them, it makes the job of team selection easier. Also squad sessions should be organised at the start of the season, and consideration given to moving them around the county.
With Kerry having won the Brewster in 2001, and the winning team ineligible for 3 years, the aim was to put in a credible performance, and maybe, just maybe go one better than last year where Kerry finished third. Little did we know that the Brewster Cup would be returning to Kerry for the 2 time in three years.
With Clare pulling out the night before, Kerry had a bye in the first round, so our first opponents were the defending champions Tipperary who were beaten 7-2 by Waterford, with Limerick beating Cork 7-2. Kerry beat Tipperary 6-3, with wins by Lynda McCarthy & Breda O’Mahony in first ladies; Betty O’Farrell & Sinead Galvin in 2 ladies; both in three sets; Billy Lacey & Graeme Watt in 1 men’s. Kerry also took 1 and 2 mixed with Sinead & Graeme, and Lynda & Mark Loughnane respectively. The singles were shared with Kerry taking the men’s with Billy. The 6-3 victory could easily have been a 7-2, as Kerry was unlucky to lose 2 men’s in 3 sets. The second round saw Waterford defeat Limerick 5-4.
Up next were old rivals Cork, and it was here that everything nearly fell apart for Kerry. The doubles were shared with Kerry winning first ladies with Lynda & Breda and 1 men’s with Billy & Graeme. First and second mixed went to Cork in three sets, with Mark & Lynda winning in straight sets in 3 mixed. So it was 4-3 with the singles to play. Billy won the men’s in straight sets, and Sinead Galvin who had won the first set 11-3, went down in 3 sets. The second game in round 3 saw Tipperary beat Limerick 5-4. It was back to the drawing board for Kerry.
Round 4 saw Kerry take on Limerick. Kerry took both ladies in three sets, with Sinead and Bríd Murphy winning thrilling 2 ladies at 17-15 in the 3 set. The men’s doubles were shared with Billy & Graeme taking 1 men’s and Jamie McGarr & Kevin Lenihan going down in 2 sets. Kerry won 2 out of 3 in the mixed, with wins in 2 sets by Graeme & Sinead in 1, and Mark & Lynda in 2. The singles again were shared with Breda winning 11-0, 11-3, and Billy losing in 3 sets. So it was Kerry 6; Limerick 3, with Waterford beating Cork 6-3.
And so to the final round. The leader board was Limerick 18 with 4 games played; Waterford 18; Kerry 16; Tipperary 10; Cork 10, with 3 games played. For Kerry to win outright we had to defeat Waterford 6-3. A tall order but to their credit the teams pulled out all the stops to achieve just that! First up were Lynda & Breda in 1 ladies. This was a new doubles pairing that had gone undefeated all day. They won 15-5; 15-5. Kerry’s 2 ladies went down 15-4; and 15-9. The men’s were also shared with Billy & Graeme recording their 4 win in 1 men’s. So it was now Waterford 20; Kerry 18. And so down to the mixed with the ladies singles also on court. The three mixed went to 3 sets with Sinead & Graeme going down 15-8 in the 3. Betty & Jamie took 2 with Lynda & Mark recording their 4 mixed win. Breda took the ladies in 2 sets 11-6; 11-4. It was now Waterford 21, Kerry 21 with the final game on court. Billy Lacey lost the first set 15-3 but staged a remarkable recovery to win 15-6; 15-6, and victory for Kerry.
So all in all it was a marvellous Kerry performance. Each and every player did their part and they were a credit to Kerry badminton
Finally, I would like to thank the players concerned and a word of thanks to Sheila and Junior for their words of wisdom, advice and support on the day.
